Officer Report 12/7/2010
I took some time to work on administrative tasks like updating an induction checklist, improving the process for new members, and creating a "welcome to Interlock" document that covers a lot of details that are useful to new members. I've granted access to the other officers to make new email accounts. I attended the network infrastructure group meeting.

Officer Report 11/2/2010
Most of this month was in build up for Barcamp Rochester and Rochester Security Summit. I did a talk at Barcamp Rochester and ran a booth at RSS. I setup a connection to the ChaosVPN (with the help of the Syracuse Innovation Guild) which will leverage in some awesome services in the near future like the ChaosPhone, OpenCTF games, JabberCracking rainbow table web service, and more. I setup 3 lockpick stations for people to practice on and will be running a workshop on lock picking at the 2600 meeting this week. I have been attending the electronics class and making horribly functioning circuits on off hours. Bryan and I are still chasing down a projector for a multimedia project.

My goals for next month are to focus on more of the administrative side of Interlock, further enhance the security offerings at Interlock.

Officer Report 10/5/2010
Summary
I spent most of last month at the Arduino class and brainstorming some geeky ideas with Bryan and Wayne related to a large scale multimedia project of sorts. I attended the Network Infrastucture group meeting. I've been working with JP Bourget and some of the organizers of the Rochester Security Summit to get Interlock a table in the CTF area and we will be supplying some alcohol for the after event networking event. I helped Brian provision the tool chest (from a nice Italian family) to compliment the workbench and I'm working on picking up some projector screens if they're still available from Craigslist.

RSS:

Rochester Security Summit is happening this month and Interlock has been given a table in the CTF area along with 2 tickets. We'll be coordinating the table, giving away drink tickets, and organizing an after event to showcase the space. I have to come up with an idea of giving away drink tickets in a simple way and will be looking for volunteers.

Officer Report 9/6/2010
Summary
Finally finished negotiations with Frontier. They will be comping us a large amount of money for all the mess ups and even some extra for pain and suffering. We have yet to receive an updated bill though. We're still in between communication mechanisms between Facebook, Twitter, Meetup, and the website. Our plan is to get some members to help and form a unified system of communication.

Personal additions:
* I helped Wayne and Jeremy setup a door to start picking locks
* Talked to Jason about him putting on a lock picking class
* Purchased 10 door locks that don't have keys
* Provisioned a mannequin
* Made a duct tape Interlock logo outside of the space

I've spent this month on community outreach including attending a Buffalo Labs event, meeting with the Syracuse Hackerspace, coordinating the next bout of lightning talks, and meeting many of the other hackerspaces at Bsides and Defcon. The updated version of ChaosVPN has been ported to OpenWRT so we do not need a FON router anymore. Frontier and I have had scheduling conflicts but we expect that they will meet with us this week or the next. Website stuff has been updated to the latest version of Wordpress. The wiki has some issues that we could use help on. There was some talk about people upgrading the production network but nothing has happened.

Outreach
* Buffalo:Jeremy and I attended the Buffalo Hackerspaces BBQ event earlier in the month. We met a lot of the members there and discussed doing a co-event.
*Syracuse:Ben, Jeremy and I attended the Syracuse Hackerspace meeting in a Syracuse Bar. Attendees were interested in what we did from a business approach and we offerred to help out wherever we could.
*Defcon/Bsides:I attended Defcon and Bsides with Jeremy Ross. He introduced me to Mudge who is in charge of a DARPA project to get funding to a lof ot hackerspaces. I met some of the members from DenHack, AlphaLabs, Hacklab.To, DevNull, and PS:One. I met some people from Rochester that didn't know about the Rochester Hackerspace. My black Interlock shirt fit in well to the crowd.
*Lightning Talks: RIT/Remy Decausemaker, CoWorking Rochester/David Moffit, and I have been brainstorming about dates and setup for a Lightning Talk event at RIT's innovation center. When we have more details, we'll need volunteers to help out on the day of the event.

Frontier
Our main Frontier rep had a family emergency leaving her out for a week so we have yet to sit down. I need to call back to confirm a time to meet with her and the regional General Manager to hash out the details of our bills.

ChaosVPN
I attended the Defcon talk about the ChaosVPN and learned more about how it works. The OpenWRT version of the software was released a couple weeks ago at HOPE so we'll be implementing that as soon as I set some time aside for it, or another member feels like doing it.

Web Hosting
Wordpress has been updated to the latest version. There were no updates for MediaWiki. We do have a problem with the MediaWiki installation instance because of the way we have updates setup. Some of the file attachments that we created are not working or are not linked properly. I could use some help on this.

Officer Report 7/6/2010
Summary
We are working on linking up with the ChaosVPN/Agora Link as discussed previously. A Fon router with a custom firmware solution is going to be our best bet. I am still wrestling with Frontier to get the upgraded bandwidth and lower price. The plan is to upgrade this week.

Officer Report 6/1/2010
Summary
The network update is that Bill has donated a new piece of equipment that will hopefully allow us to provide some basic services like LDAP authentication. Frontier has repeatedly been a problem and I have been leaving messages with our rep. With Alan and Ashley leaving, I'll be following up on more administrative tasks this month.

Tasks Complete (by members):
* setup a stable wireless solution
* provide production infrastructure

Next Steps:
* Provide a better technical documentation management system away from the discussion lists
* Draft policies
* Pursue issue with Frontier
* Support production network setup

Officer Report 5/4/2010
Summary:
This month was follow up on existing goals. The network setup is functionally complete and we’ll be following up on proper documentation and labeling. Frontier is continuing to cause us problems that I’m spending a lot of time on. Next steps will be to establish some member services on the network (LDAP, file share, virtual machines) and establish the inter-hackerspace Agora link.

Network:
Infrastructure is just about complete at which time we’ll move on to providing services on the network. We received a donation of 9 blade server but none of them have hard drives. One of the future needs will be hard drives that fit into the bays of the systems.

Tasks Complete:
* Physical network drops
* Switch/router configuration
* Physical cable organization
Tasks Incomplete:
* Employ labeling system for jacks
* Replace pfsense with a lower power device
* Setup a more stable wireless solution

Internet:
Frontier has not followed up on their promises to discount our bill and provide double the service. I have been actively nagging our Frontier rep until they do.

Policies:
One of the tasks of the VP role is to draft policies of the corporation. The induction and deduction checklist is drafted on the wiki as well as an acceptable use policy. More policies will be drafted and eventually evaluated for approval by the general members.

Items Completed from last month:
* <s>Add technical steps to induction and deduction checklist </s>
• <s>Finish installing network drops and configuring the switches on the network</s>

Next Steps
* Provide a better technical documentation management system away from the discussion lists
* Pursue issue with Frontier and come to a conclusion
* Support final infrastructure changes

Officer Report 4/6/2010
Summary:
The big items this month are related to networking and Internet. The physical and logical portions of the network are close to complete. We’ve received a lot of very important donations from members and non-members. Internet has been an issue trying to get the service that we’ve purchased. Overall, there are no major problems and we’re progressing quickly towards a great network setup.

Network:
This month, members of the group have laid out the physical network, punched down jacks all around the space, helped coordinate purchasing of necessary parts, and started to lay out the framework for the network infrastructure. We received a lot of important donations related to the core networking. The current documentation for networking is on the wiki including subnet schemes and logical setup. [See Figure 1 and Figure 2]. There is private documentation that we’ll be storing in a yet to be determined location.

Network consists currently of a project, warzone, and production network. Project network is unmanaged but is connected to our main firewall to keep track of bandwidth and provide QoS if necessary. Warzone network is a dedicated info sec sandbox area. Production network supports the main services that Interlock provides to its members and guests. It’s sub-divided into servers, member wireless, member wired, and guest. Firewall rules are set up appropriately to restrict guest access.

Wireless access is provided to guests, members, and to the Warzone network. The member access point only supports 10 or 15 clients at one time so we’ll be replacing it with something that doesn’t have that restriction.

There is a new server donated to us that has ESXi on it. The hardware is good enough that we may be able to virtualize all necessary servers on it (ex. LDAP) without having to setup individual hardware. This will minimize power consumption.
Web Site

Website is hosted under Dreamhost donated by Mark Manning. Interlock.org has the latest version of Wordpress as of 4/5/2010 as well as the latest plugins. The wiki is also hosted on Dreamhost (MediaWiki) and is the latest version. The wiki and Wordpress blog have had a few issues of spam but they’ve been easy to manage.

Mailing Lists
We are using Google Groups to manage our 3 mailing lists: Interlock Rochester, Interlock Rochester Announce, and InterlockRocPrivate which is a director only mailing list. There have been only a few instances of spam on the mailing lists but not anything that’s a problem. There is some discussion about re-organizing the lists or going with a different software in the future but at this time, nothing has been officially planned.

Email Accounts
Each user should have an email account hosted with Google Apps. We have 32 accounts and are allowed to have up to 50 accounts. This isn’t up to date so we’ll be updating the induction checklist to include this as new members join.

Internet
We have functioning Internet access in the space provided by Frontier. The available download speed is only half of what our contract says we should have. Mark has had phone conversations every business day since 3/14 at 10:00am with the account rep to rectify the issue. Frontier has also had a billing mistake and over charged us. We have received quotes from Timewarner Cable to also provide service but continue to work with Frontier to either get the speed we requested or a cheaper rate.

Security
We’ve installed an IP based webcam this month that has a dedicated line run back to the network rack. It hasn’t been configured at this point. The plan is to setup a closed circuit security system that monitors the door. No specific details of the software or configuration have been set yet.

Next Steps:
*Add technical steps to induction and deduction checklist
*Provide a better technical documentation management system away from the discussion lists (GIT)
*Pursue issue with Frontier and come to a conclusion
*Finish installing network drops and configuring the switches on the network

Long Term:
*Establish connection with Agora network
*Decide and setup member services (LDAP, file storage, VPN)
*Install better battery backups for the equipment
*Implement a security system

(omitted)
(omitted)
Figure 1. Logical network setup. NOTE: This is the proposed network setup and not necessarily the current one.

* Provisioned a mannequin
* Made a duct tape Interlock logo outside of the space

* provide production infrastructure

Next Steps:
* Provide a better technical documentation management system away from the discussion lists
* Draft policies
* Pursue issue with Frontier
* Support production network setup

* Physical network drops
* Switch/router configuration
* Physical cable organization

* Support final infrastructure changes

* Provisioned a mannequin
* Made a duct tape Interlock logo outside of the space

Officer Report 8/3/2010
Summary

We are working on linking up with the ChaosVPN/Agora Link as discussed previously. A Fon router with a custom firmware solution is going to be our best bet. I am still wrestling with Frontier to get the upgraded bandwidth and lower price. The plan is to upgrade this week.

* Physical network drops
* Switch/router configuration
* Physical cable organization

* Support final infrastructure changes

(omitted)
Figure 1. Physical network setup
(omitted)
Figure 1. Logical network setup. NOTE: This is the proposed network setup and not necessarily the current one.

Antitree: /* Temp Space October 2009 */ bug. i hate bugs.

This is an attempt at just before the three year mark, to organize a history of Interlock. For new members or other hacker spaces this is where you can learn from our trials and our tribulations. It gives a reminder of where we have been and how much we have grown. IGadget

Founding - October 2009
In October of 2009, local groups were visited asking if any of them were interested in starting a "hackerspace" in Rochester. The Linux User Group of Rochester, an RIT organization called Rochester Hackers, Rochester 2600 all got a visit asking this question. At that time, most asked "what is a hackerspace" and by the end many were interested in getting one started. Following the way that the Buffalo hackerspace had started, a Meetup.com account was purchased under the title "Rochester Hackerspace." This was quickly the first hit when searching for that term.

The first meeting ever was attended by 5 or 6 people. AntiTree, Jerel (Buffalo hackerspace), Matt (Buffalo hackerspace), and a few others who names escape me. It took place at Spot Coffee on East Ave downtown. The second meeting was attended by future founding member Berticus and 6 or 7 others. Eventually Alan and Ashley came to visit from Rochester Hackers, and a few from RIT. The group grew large enough that we weren't sure we could just grab a table anymore so we reserved a space upstairs in Spot. Eventually moving meetings to Coworking Rochester who let us set up show while we structured. It was at this meeting that the first group decision was made, to name the hackerspace "Interlock Rochester."

The group quickly figured out how to structure and created a not for profit corporation. This included creating Bylaws, official rules for meetings, and assigning officers and directors. With some convincing, and at least 6 shots of whiskey, Antitree convinced Alan to move into a leadership role as the official president, but also as the person running the meetings and keeping the peace. Antitree was put as the Vice President, Berticus as the Secretary, and Ashley as the Treasurer.

While the corporation was getting approved by the state, the group quickly moved into a physical location at the Hungerford building on 1115 E. Main St. With a limited budget and small membership, the group found the cheapest space they could afford. The lease was put in the names of Alan, Antitree, and Berticus.

The organization was officially incorporated as New York State approved Not For Profit corporation on January 1st 2010.

Temp Space October 2009
Two rooms - the front, about 300sq.ft. and rear 225sq.ft. This small closet of an area was located across the hall from where our first space was being prepped. October 2009 we moved in.
Building management was working on segmenting off our space to be, removing a bunch of junk and clearing out a pile of pipeage from the ceiling. We were clearing things off too.

The move date slipped a few times because of delays on their end and scope changes on ours. We discussed the types of meetings we would hold and how memberships would work. Safety issues and the or the lack of safety measures were discussed and a military issue personal field trauma kit was hung on the wall for future need.

A sink and small hot water tank were added to the planned kitchen area. A couple of minifridges showed up to keep necessary things cold.

Planning for what would be where in the new space was a regular discussion point at meetings. An Electrical Diagram was drawn up for the space and a group of people took it upon themselves to put together a well provisioned network. What is Hacker Space without a network? Boring, but more on that later. A member donated cable from a work upgrade so plenty was on hand. It was decided to hang too much rather than have to string wire later. A six drop box would be installed at every 4 gang duplex outlet the kitchen had three drops. Overkill. Some tool-less install jacks were used which while cheap, were touchy to install. With some confusion and much testing there was a working internal network when we officially opened the doors.

During the following months the number of people in the group exploded. Our first Lightening Talks were scheduled in , . Remey from RIT started bringing in students to collaborate on projects. The Temp Space was getting cozy.

There was a pretty major problem with horrific insects that appeared to be the Jurassic ancestor of the cockroach, centipede, and praying mantis. Most pretended they didn't exist but the gasp-stomp was a common dance move at the space.

Basement Space March 2010
At the beginning of March 2010 we finally moved into our first space. Its 1100 sq.ft. size was just about double the Temp Space and felt huge with possibilities. It was also clean and painted white the floor was painted grey, it was bright, very bright. Right away we started changing things. Beardicus put in place the Keyless door system and it was operational 4-6-2010. Plans were discussed to attach it to the yet un-built LDAP server.

The brightness was addressed by taking out half the florescent tubes and a mostly four person crew of Adam, Ashly, Nick and Steve started painting pipes all different colors. One night after some drinking a couch was painted as well.

The two mini-fridges from the temporary space were upgraded to a regular fridge which turned up from an unused area of the building. It turns out that a full sized fridge uses less electricity over a couple of days than a single dorm fridge does. It has better insulation so it cycles on fewer times once it is at temp. The full size unit holds more 'beverage of choice' too.

This led to some chaos and stubbed toes and a surprise mannequin placed just inside the door in such a way to scare some life into the next person to open the space. Later to become Mannequin Ceiling-Hanger.

Network provider - aka The Trouble with Tribbles
Choosing a network provider turned out to be harder than we thought. TWTC wanted an arm, a leg, and the first born child. That wouldn't work on our fledgling Non Profit budget. Frontier, the LEC, was willing to work on the price point for a three year contract. We had two POTS lines and a DSL carrier on the secondary line. The first DSL Bridge bit the dust because it wasn't attached to the DeMARC well, A random person moving stuff bumped into it knocking it off.

Later to get us the speed they promised they ended up adding a second DSL line in on a third circuit (blind or naked DSL). A special two circuit bridge was installed which no one at their support knew existed or how to troubleshoot. Only 2 field techs in the area knew how it worked. You don't want to be a guinea pig for your internet provider unless they give you a tech support number for the people running the tests. It kept mysteriously failing. Internet service would still be there, both DSL lights would be active, but only few percent of packets would go though.

After many months we were finally given a way to troubleshoot/test it when it was failing and to get it half operational. The problem turned out to be that the unit didn't handle it well when one of the circuits became noisy, but didn't fail completely. The phone board was rewired so that anyone with a pair of pliers could hard fail either circuit to restore partial functionality to internet access. Neither circuit would remain clean for more than a few weeks. This wasn't working out and we were beginning to look at expanding. The search was opened up for a new space and a new internet provider.

First Space March 2010

The search was opened up for a new space and a new internet provider.

what we do
We generally hang out on the Xerox repeater, KE2MK/R, as it is one of the few repeaters we are able to work on 2M/440 from rubber duck antennas on HTs from inside Interlock. We also occasionally use the Harris repeater.

As of late the XARC repeater has been having some difficulties and so we are hanging out on MCARES/N2MPE (146.61) until the issues are resolved.

Xerox ARC Repeater
* Output: 145.29 (you listen on this frequency)
* Input: 144.69 (you transmit on this frequency) - negative offset
* Output: 444.825
* Input: 449.825 - positive offset
* No PL tone required (RX PL 110.9 works to cut down intermod)
* Echolink node #44856

MCARES Repeater
* Output: 146.610
* Input: 146.010 (negative offset)
* TX PL 110.9 (no RX PL)
* No Echolink / IRLP but does have multiple receivers around Monroe County
* Call sign is N2MPE, only IDs in morse. No roger beep. Control Op is Tony DiLettera from Radio Center.

Interlock Simplex
* Frequency: 442.420 (110.9 PL TX/RX)
* Note: this frequency is outside the normal step for 70cm, so you make have to do something funky to get your radio to tune it (like change your step for 70cm to 5Hz)
* Ben will occasionally crossband repeat to/from one of the local repeaters (usually MCARES, see above) on this frequency so that those in the space can take advantage of the higher power transmitter. Please be careful to make sure this is not the case before attempting to use this as a simplex frequency.

Xerox used to be Echolink enabled but is no longer. JD used to run Echolink on it over RF and may allow Interlock to run a similar setup, once we have an antenna. Information is flowing slowly on this though.

None of our official unofficial repeaters support IRLP. Some of the other local repeaters do. If you are interested in IRLP, check out this site for a brief introduction on how to use it: http://k3bay.com/html/irlp.php

antenna building
We have ordered the parts needed to build 2-meter j-pole antennas. We will be assembling them next Make Night, Thursday July 8th.
Update: Antenna make night was a success. Thanks to all who attended. Please watch for similar events in the future!

roof antenna
We have permission from Maguire to install an antenna on the roof as long as it is free-standing (ie, we don't bolt it to the roof). Also, the feed line can't whip in the wind or whack up against the building (so it needs to be secured somehow -- conduit?).
Any items awaiting approval that don't receive objections within 7 days after being proposed will be considered approved and assigned a priority level.
Top Priority
These items should be taken care of as soon as possible.

High Priority
* Create a footer for the website and move the Hackerspaces, Elsewhere, and Search from the sidebar to the footer.
* Remove the Contribute page and replace with a Partners page that gives information on the benefits of providing discounts to our members, statistics about web and foot traffic, examples of current partnerships, and sponsorship information.
* Add a Press page that lists external articles about Interlock. Include a link to a press kit that has high resolution versions of the logo with white, black, and transparent backgrounds.
* Update verbiage on the RocWiki page.

Low Priority
* Create colored icons for each category type (events, classes, news, etc.), placed either to the left of the title or floated left of the first paragraph.
* Create a web interface to the LDAP server with functionality to allow for business partners to check the status of members. Add access to this under the Partners page.
* Figure out why the Flickr gallery displays pictures in a seemingly random order at seemingly random times.

No Priority
* Cache 3-5 of the upcoming events in the Google Calendar locally so there isn't such a long load time, or implement an animated gear loading icon.
* Change the index to be more of a landing page with just the first paragraphs from the latest 3-5 blog posts, a featured project, a more expanded definition of the hackerspace, and a more stylized upcoming events with a short one-liner description and direct links to a related blog post.
* Template the wiki to match the main site.

Awaiting Approval
Parentheses indicate suggested priority.

Unapproved
Completed
* The current Wordpress theme is now heavily customized and should be renamed to prevent any accidental updates through the WP dashboard, which would reset all of these modifications.
* Create a dev environment for testing new versions of Wordpress and plugins.
* Rewrite some sections from the About page, and update the membership benefits to include specifics on discounts.
* Remove the member dues from the sidebar and make a new page that contains the membership application, agreement, and dues. (Note: Moved to About page instead.)
* Include a banner picture in the header or a rotating image at the top of the sidebar.
* Prevent the Flickr Gallery plugin's scripts and styles from loading on anything but the Photos page.
* Concatenate all external CSS and JS files. (Note: Instead, prevented all the scripts/styles in the Flickr Gallery plugin from loading on every page.)
* Add a Sponsors or Partners section on the sidebar with 2 100x100 logos per line. Links should open in a new page.
* Reorganize the contact page and integrate a Google map into the page.
* Add a hack to fix the Chrome bug that makes dotted borders disappear on elements taller than 4096px.
* Fix CSS issue that causes double borders on the Flickr gallery.
Description:
The windows at the temp space and the final space have double pane security glass. Light is diffused but one can imagine the possibilities

Goals:
* Keep costs to a minimum
* Create a system that others can learn to use (not static content)

Ideas:
* Treat each pane as a pixel for pong, tetris, animated gifs, etc
* Spell INTERLOCK in the glass
* Game of Life pattern
* Multicolor LEDs -
* hot glue gun
* 22 guage wire
* Mounting block

Comments
How many "pixels" do we have to work with? I seem to recall 3 high, maybe 12-16 long with a window interrupting four-ish blocks in the center. Letters are pretty tricky with just three vertical pixels. More abstract light patterns would be really cool though. --Berticus 20:47, 8 December 2009 (UTC)

Problem: our windows are obscured by shrubbery. So unless we're lighting them up from the outside for our own enjoyment within the space, this idea may be DOA. --Berticus 19:42, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
Description
Interlock needs an easy way to give members access to the space. It is important however, to maintain the ability to easily remove access punitively or as members choose to leave the group. The ability to keep track of who enters and leaves the space is not only helpful for security, but also could be used creatively.

Overview
Version 1: Currently, in space(42), the double doors have a wire run through them to connect to an electric strike. When activated, the strike magnetizes and unlocks the door. This activation is controlled by an Arduino(FreeDuino) and a custom built Arduino shield. The purpose of the shield is to interface with both the electric strike and the iButton using the One Wire protocol. When an iButton is pressed, the circuit processes whether or not the iButton is on the list of users allowed to enter. If so, the eletric strike is activated granting access.

Version 2: The latest version builds upon version one with new hardware and support for an authorization service, LDAP. An OpenLDAP server with all of the past and present members in it contains their current membership status. When a member uses their iButton to enter the door, the Arduino (now a Pachube network based Aruduino type IC) relays the serial number of the iButton to an OpenLDAP server. The OpenLDAP server runs a proprietary service on a specific port so that it only returns the status of that iButton and no other information (due to processing costs). NOTE: The system has been program and tested in a development scenario but has yet to be installed into the current space.

References
* http://arduino.cc/en/Reference/Ethernet - reference for working with ethernet
* http://www.maxim-ic.com/products/ibutton/ - iButton

Work Log
* Berticus purchased a four conductor electronic hinge. 2/15
* Circuitry is breadboarded and functioning. 2/7
* Berticus is working on iButton/Arduino portion. Antitree ordered 25 ibuttons and holders shipped UPS ground on 1/25.
* problem with strike not fitting in the door from Felix. Talked to Brian The Door Guy. Purchased HES 5900 strike plate for $125 that will work in the door. He will give us the wires to organize ourselves. Setup allows for someone inside to open door even during a power outage. --Antitree 18:48, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
* Received electric strike, rfid reader, arduino ethernet shield
Creating Solaris Zones

Antitree: cool but relevant?

These commands have been tested on OpenSolaris 2009.6 amd64. Your mileage may vary depending on the version of Solaris.

General commands
* zone adm list -vc = list current zone containers
* isainfo = processor extension support, Like /proc/cpuinfo on Linux

Create a ZFS pool to use
In order for any zone to be created in OpenSolaris, a ZFS resource pool must be created explicitly for the purpose of zones. This ZFS pool cannot be the / of the machine. The steps below simply create a new pool under /export/zones, but remounts it under /zones, for easier access.
# zfs create rpool/export/zones
# zfs set mountpoint=/zones rpool/export/zones

Create a zone directory
Change the permissions on the directory, so that only the root can gain access to it. I think this is so that internal proccess to the zone cannot be chrooted out by accident, or via a buffer overflow attack.
# mkdir /zones/zoneName
# chmod 700 /zones/zoneName

Create a new zone
Here the zone's basic configuration is created. These commands can also be shortened into a single command-line call.
# zonecfg -z zoneName
> create
> set zonepath=/zones/zoneName
> set autoboot=true
> add net
net> set address x.x.x.x/nn
net> set physical e1000g0
net> set defrouter x.x.x.254
net> end
> info
> verify
> commit
> exit

Install the zone's base system
Essentially copies a minimal installation of OpenSolaris into the root of the zone, which in this example is /zones/zoneName.
NOTE: This part takes about 10 - 20 minutes to complete
# zoneadm -z zoneName install

Boot the zone
Tells the kernel to start up all virtual devices paired to this zone, and creates a console connection to the zone.
# zoneadm -z zoneName boot

Login to the zone
This is the same as using a dumb terminal to connect into the device.
# zlogin -c zoneName

* You break it, you bought it: If you are hacking away and the system or service becomes unresponsive, please do your best to bring it back up. If all else fails, talk to antitree.
* Take off your whitehat: Please don't break in and fix a hole for someone else. The network is designed for all skill levels and we'd like to keep even the simple vulnerabilities open. That being said, if you notice a hole in a member's PoB (personally owned box) it would be nice if you told them.

Welcome potential guests of Interlock! You are likely viewing this page because you are interested in attending one of our meetings or events. If you are already a member and have keys, see this page.

Our street address is 1115 East Main Street, Suite 200, Rochester, NY 14609. If you have a GPS this will likely get you into the parking lot.
If you don't have a GPS, the easiest way to get to the building is via I-490. Take 490 in the appropriate direction to exit 17 for Goodman Street. Head north on South Goodman, which will (technically) turn into Circle St. Turn right onto East Main St and head east. You can enter the Hungerford parking lot (free parking) by taking a right at the first traffic light for North Goodman (it is the only thing on North Goodman that is south of East Main St).

You could also take I-490 to the Inner Loop, and get off at Main Street. Turn away from downtown (East), and proceed down Main Street over the railroad tracks. Interlock will be on your right, Immediately after you cross the bridge.

Interlock is located inside door #7 which is towards the west side of the complex.

We are currently waiting on management to get us hooked into the door system so you can get buzzed in easily. In the meantime, there should be a note on the door with a number you can call to get let in. This issue should be resolved by early December.

Steps to Forming an NFP - In Progress/Articles of Incorporation sent to Dept of Ed for approval
Guide to forming a non-profit in NYS from NYS website: http://www.dos.state.ny.us/corp/nfpguide.htm

Sample articles of organization with required 501(3)c inclusions: http://www.irs.gov/charities/foundations/article/0,,id=141238,00.html

Being approved as an "educational" organization - Consent In Progress
To be recognized as a 501(3)c organization, we must include in our purpose that we are "charitable", "educational", or "scientific." Existing hackerspaces we have spoke to usually choose all three terms in their statement of purpose. In NY, if we want to include educational or scientific in our purpose, we need the consent of the Dept of Education, Office of Counsel. I have sent in our organizing documents (Certificate of Incorporation) to the Office of Counsel as of 12/6. I added the necessary disclaimers to receive consent. Until we receive consent, which should not be difficult but simply takes time, we cannot file the certificate of incorporation. Once we receive consent, I will re-file our Certificate of Incorporation. - (This is an area of non-profit law specific to NYS). http://www.counsel.nysed.gov/forms/ques.html#q1

Responsibilities of an NFP in New York State - Begin once Corporation is filed
(From the NY Division of Corporations website) The existence of the corporation begins upon the filing of the Certificate of Incorporation with the Department of State. After the corporate existence has begun, an organization meeting of the initial directors designated in the Certificate of Incorporation must be held for the purpose of adopting by-laws, electing directors and the transaction of any other business. (See Section 405 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law.)

The corporation is required to keep correct and complete books and records of account and must keep minutes of the proceedings of its members, board of directors and executive committee, if any. The corporation must also keep a record containing the names and addresses of all members, the number of capital certificates held by each member and the dates when they respectively became the owners of record thereof. (See Section 621 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law.)

In addition, a meeting of members must be held annually for the election of directors and the transaction of other business on a date fixed by or under the by-laws. (See Section 603 of the Not-for-Profit Corporation Law.)

Not-for-profit corporations formed for charitable purposes may be required to register with the Office of the Attorney General, Charities Bureau, Registration Section, 120 Broadway, New York, NY 10271. The telephone number is (212) 416-8415. The website address is www.oag.state.ny.us.

Applying for Tax Exempt 501(3)c Status - Begin shortly after corporation is filed
Once we have filed the non-profit corporation, we can apply (within 15 months) for tax exempt status. the corp will be formed right away, but the tax exempt status will just take some time to put together all of the necessary paperwork and be approved. Other hackerspaces applying for tax exempt status are one of our best resources for obtaining 501(3)(c) status. If anyone knows of any hackerspaces who have been officially approved, it would benefit us to contact these hackerspaces and collaborate to some degree with the people who organized those documents.

- A PDF from the NY Lawyer's Alliance that explains, step by step, how to fill out FORM 1023 (our application for tax exempt status): http://www.lawyersalliance.org/pdfs/GO_Chap7_Insert.pdf

- More about applying for tax exempt status here (dumbed down): http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4220.pdf

- And here (very detailed and provides specific information regarding form 1023 inclusions) http://www.irs.gov/publications/p557/

Note: We can form the corporation and have up to 15 months to file for tax-exempt status. we do not have to wait to call ourselves tax-exempt, and as long as we get approved eventually, we can take donations and tell donors that our tax-exemption status is currently pending. any donations given would retroactively be tax exempt as long as we are approved.

Registering with the NY Attorney General - Look into immediately
As a tax-exempt organization, we would need to register with the NY Attorney General, Charities Bureau at http://www.charitiesnys.com/charities_new.html. I am not sure if we h
ave to file that immediately if we are planning on being a 501(3)c, or if we wait until approval?
Build Out

Antitree:

Space Build Out
We need to figure out what we need to do to make the space exactly how we'd like it. This includes painting, construction, building/putting together shelves, etc. Feel free to edit this page to discuss ideas and personal building projects.

Build Out Dates
No dates have been set yet. Suggested dates:
* April 3, 2010
* April 10, 2010

Painting Projects
I think we can all agree that the white colored walls are drab and don't add anything to our space. We can make the space as vibrant as we are as a group!

Pipes
A few people have already started painting the pipes in the room. We currently have some blue pipes, some black pipes and some lime and cyan pipes. We can paint the rest of the pipes to continue on and we can make new colors at junctions (or at different pipes.)

* I think it would be really cool to have all of the pipes colored solidly along their entire length, which would create a very simple blend of colors as they cross over and under each other. --Amouravski 18:32, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

* Pipes that have sprinkler heads on them need to be red, for safety / compliance issues.

Walls
The walls are bland white, let's fix that. Keep in mind that one wall should remain white (for the time being) so that our projector has a surface to project on. Ideas include painting murals, putting more whiteboards on the walls (and actually mounting them) and getting a projector screen.

Ceiling
The ceiling needs some work. Black seemed to work across the hall. Ditto for the columns.
Steampunk-ness was suggested, but the amount of labor may be prohibitive, as would the necessary amount of ventilation to properly varnish the wood.

Projector Screen
We should probably get a projector screen so that we can always be sure of having a good surface to project onto.
Ideas?

Murals
* Going along the lines of Freeside Atlanta, I would like to see more artistic expression around the space. I would like to see really interesting unique murals on the walls of our space. Something bold to look at that's not just white. --Amouravski 18:32, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
* I'm planning on painting an optical illusion mural where if you stand at the front door and look towards the kitchen, then you will see a flat Interlock logo, but in reality, the logo is spread out over various items. It'll be cool. Trust me. --Amouravski 19:07, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
* I'd be into doing a mural. Ideas that come to mind (JustinKramer 21:38, 17 March 2010 (UTC)):
** in the style of the Old Masters but with electronic elements inserted (laptop, breadboard, etc.)
** some kind of graphic, creative interpretation of circuitry
** pixel art, from video games or elsewhere
** Chuck Close-style (portrait of a revered computing figure?)
** ASCII art

Whiteboards
We discussed this awhile ago, but we should get more whiteboards so that we are able to both discuss things during seminars and the like. Multiple whiteboards would allow for one that acts purely as a didactic tool, one that is for events and agendas, others for side conversations, etc. Putting a whiteboard where the projector projects would allow for writing on the slides, etc.

* Home Depot sells large sheets of effectively laminated particleboard, which I assume is for walls or floors, but it works really well as a whiteboard. I have one in my room. It is something like 12'x6' (will measure later) and cost about $15. The only thing is that we need to get a truck or something to transport them effectively. This is a cheap solution, without magnets, but light so that they can be easily mounted. --Amouravski 18:32, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Walls
Painting the walls an interesting color could add brightness to the space. Mixed with good lighting, we could create a good atmosphere. However, colored lights with white walls may be good enough.

Columns
The columns we have in the space are ugly and stupid and ugly. Let's do something
*My idea is to sand down the columns entirely, down to the bare wood and then find a good stain, something deep mahogany or so, and then stain the wood until it looks good (old, antique, hardcore) and then put a good clear finish on it. Then we can take the the sheet metal joints, sand those down, and then paint them bright metallic brass color on them and if that looks good, keep it as is, otherwise dirty it up with some stain and then voila! we have steampunk columns! --Amouravski 19:07, 17 March 2010 (UTC)
*Oh yeah, we can also do this for all the ceiling beams, but that's quite a lot of work. However, if we actually do it, the space will look really cool and will have a really homey feel to it, even with the colorful pipes. --Amouravski 19:07, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Lights
There have been several ideas about retooling the bright fluorescent lights we have hanging currently.
* One idea is to replace the lights with LED lights, so that we could control the brightness and make the lights less harsh.
* Another idea is to mount lights behind the rafters to help diffuse the light.
* Not sure whether we should keep the lights and supplement them, or replace them entirely.

Discuss.

Shelving
We have discussed shelving ideas but now we need to really put something together.
* Cubby system is one idea, where people could store their own stuff, but also have space for our tools.
* Big metal shelves. These would be immovable, and have lots of space. Fit against a wall, up to the ceiling, we could store quite a bit more.
We are starting to get a lot of stuff in the space: paint, tools, wires, networking stuff, and it needs a home.

Construction
What kinds of things should we permanently add to the space?
Projector Mount
Currently the projector rests on the table and it is finicky to adjust it to point at the correct space on the wall. It's also annoying in that it takes up space on the table. It could go on the ceiling or attached to a column, but ceiling is more out of the way.

Presumably a mount should:
* Allow for easy connection to VGA/DVI ports.
* Be out of the way, which includes power, etc.
* Allow for removal of the projector if we need it down for other purposes.

I am not sure if we have a remote for the projector, but one would be helpful.

Kitchen Improvements
The kitchen is great, but we're not really utilizing the space as well as we could be.
Shelving
We have a lot of stuff just kind of sitting on top of a small table and on top of the fridges. This is not optimal. Shelves (as well as drawers) could help make the kitchen clutter free and it may make the place better for cooking/preparing food.

Tables & Chairs
The tables were recently painted, which is awesome, but what else could we do to make the seating/table arrangement better?

Floors
If we keep concrete as the floor material, we need to paint it yearly to keep the dust down. Other options may be carpet or tile, or mixes of all three.

Antitree:

We'll need a website that will serve as a PR hub, and we can also have cool member features, like web space and shells. Here are some initial thoughts:

* Calendar
* Member profiles, skills/interests
* Ongoing projects
* Message board, mailing list archives
* Photo gallery (or link to flickr group)
* Twitter (retweets member tweets, #roc-hack hashtags etc.
* Link to youtube, embedded youtubes
* Member blogs
* Anything else?

Meetup, as good of a recruitment tool as it is, costs a fair amount of money to maintain, and isn't very featureful.

I'm a bit of a web nut but I suck at design, so I'd love to work with someone on getting this going who knows anything about design. (wooby)

I'd like to work on the server setup if we are going to self-host it (once we get a space). I also wouldn't mind working a bit on the site itself. ---- BW 18:23, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

To-do
We currently have a Wordpress installation up and running, along with mediawiki. Wordpress is themed and logoed and fairly ready to go. Some things we'll need to do are

Short Term
*finish fixing the styles for the twitter widget
*find a good flickr widget and style appropriately
*delete the photos page if the flickr widget is sufficient
*<s>design and install a favicon</s>
*use same design for the wiki icon (for now)
*tweak wordpress header for a bit more color and visual interest
*maybe do the same to the blurb box below the header
**should blurb only be on the front page?
*beautify wiki urls
*remove temp index page
*calendar stuff
**see if wordpress calendar works well.
**if not, see if goocal can be styled to fit the site
**one concern is we don't want to be doing double/triple/quadruple entry of events - whatever we use should be able to easily export to ICS or other standard format

Web Ideas
user:sneha
I had a concept i had for the Rochester Hackerspace that I would like to share.

*It would be good to have a website that is project based, that encourages collaboration
*The idea is each member will have a project page dedicated to them.
**If you click on a members name you would be able to see all projects that the person has lead, all projects that the person had collaborated on and also projects that the person wants to do but simply doesn't have time for.
**People looking at the site could browse/search by project.
***Each project should give you basic info about how the progress made on the project, the person who is leading the project as well as people collaborating on the project.
***People should be able to find projects that are still in the idea phase, and if the idea inspires them then they should be able to work on it.
**Each project should have a message board where members can share ideas and give input on each project. This would help keep all Hackers aware of all projects in progress.

user:antitree
My thoughts on main website:
* secure wordpress install
* static information put as pages in wordpress (bylaws, about interlock)
* use of plugins to bring in a calendar, flickr, youtube, twitter, etc.
* main page is a blog with general updates, event notifications, project shout outs that can be updated by most members
* subfolders or subhosts for webspace can be made available for group projects (robots.interlock.org)
* Examples: http://hacklab.to, http://thinkhaus.org, http://hive13.org, http://www.nycresistor.com

My thoughts on project management options
* ning.com allows you to create your own social network
* network can have a blog
* members can have their own blogs
* you can integrate with flickr, youtube, hulu, etc.
* you can create groups (projects) for certain people
* members show which projects they are a part of
* the group pages are standalone but still part of the rest of the sytstem
* upload pictures via phone, etc
* control privacy of individual members and of groups
* organize events
* RSS feeds for the network and for individual groups
* Sends out broadcast messages to everyone
* $4.95/mo if we want our own domain name
* 10gb of storage for free. upgradeable
* Can customize all images in the design of the site, colors, etc. even css if you needed
* hook up with google analytics
* costs $24.95/mo to get rid of ads on the page.
* themed google ads on most pages
* not good for keeping random notes but great to share an entire network of ideas in a standard format
* OVERALL:
** privacy control
** features for integrating other things
** ability to maintain individuality while keeping people together
** good for sharing projects but not great for sharing project notes and raw data
** shows how active the hackerspace is
** Not good at sharing static information (bylaws, NFP status, about interlock)
** some good features require money

user:berticus
I think antitree's thoughts on the main website are spot-on. Look at NYC Resistor. A simple Wordpress install with general announcements on the front page, a few static pages for "about" stuff and the like, and navigation links to other apps like wikis and a class scheduling app and stuff like that. We could also use a plugin to provide a calendar and ical feed for classes and meetings. I'm not really jazzed about ning, but if it fits other people's brains then that's great. We can link to it from the main site just like the wiki and whatever other hangers-on we end up needing. This seems like a pretty straightforward way to have a "normal" public face, yet satisfy the different needs of different people with specialized sites and applications.

Summary: as long as we have a public wiki and a decent looking blog for some periodic announcements, I'm happy.

user:Ben Woodruff
I agree with Berticus for the most part. I like the idea of using Wordpress as a CMS front-end for the "website" and using plugins to pull in content from other services we use (flickr, twitter, irc logs, etc etc). We would also have links to the full blown external websites (things such as the wiki, project management system, etc). Wordpress is easy to install and manage and can integrate with LDAP for authentication. It's also fairly easy to write plugins for it (using PHP - or by using PHP to call other systems such as ruby).

WP + LDAP: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/simple-ldap-login/
I have a LOT of experience with Django and Plone, and they would both do what we need... plus they're Python, so there's the l33t factor that you don't get with Wordpress... if there's interest, I can show people how we might build a complete web app in an hour or less (or your pizza's free) --Fvox13 05:58, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

We use activeCollab at work for project management... it's a bit... work-y, but it might help with keeping track of projects. (and we don't have to use all of the businessy features) --Fvox13 14:23, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

We can probably also just look at pairing together various systems, with a custom frontend, so we have something that works well for us specifically
*Drops will have a service loop of at least 5' (Approx 2 loops)
*Bundles will be secured with velcro so that they can be modified
*The server cabinet will have its own switch to minimize cable mess between the racks
*The relay rack will need to be bolted to the floor
*Cables will be run through hooks on the ceiling or along conduit on the walls
*Since the cable supply is a mix of Cat5 and Cat5e, it will be ensured that each box has at least two runs of Cat5e
